Pandemic Reflections

Uncertainty is something that I’ve struggled with all of my life. I’ve always liked plans - I liked knowing what was going to happen next, I liked when things went accordingly, and I liked knowing what to expect. A year ago, I challenged myself to be more vulnerable, and now, I’m challenging myself to be more present.

What I’ve learned so far is that there will be times in your life where you can’t anticipate what will happen next. There will be things you can’t control, and things you can’t plan for. I’ve always been the type of person to strive for the next thing but I’ve had a switch of mindset this year. I’m recognizing that maybe at this point in my life, it isn’t about what I want, but instead, what I already have. I have so much that I still want to do, especially in my profession and making a difference with my passion in naturopathic medicine, but right now, I’m taking some time to reflect on all that I have ALREADY done, and appreciating that. Taking the time to appreciate the journey up until now is just as important as planning the next steps ahead.

Here are some affirmations that I have been working on that has helped me along the way:

  • When things don’t go accordingly, this doesn’t mean that my goal can no longer be reached anymore – it means that it is a new opportunity to explore a different path to get to that same goal.

  • I am adaptable and understand that change is a constant. Situations and things around me will always have the possibilities of modifying, and I am capable of adapting to them.

  • It’s OK to say ‘no’ to others sometimes, if it means saying ‘yes’ to yourself.

  • The best milestones in life are the ones that come with rollercoasters of emotions – the ones that make you FEEL all of them – sad, happy, scared, excited, disappointed, proud

  • I am worthy of asking for help from the important individuals around me, and my healthcare team.

Transforming these affirmations into my everyday life didn’t come with ease - it came after breakdowns, being upset and constantly disappointed, and being extremely hard on myself. It’s so important to take a step back and reflect, because reflecting means getting to know yourself a little better than you did before. This is your reminder to take time to be kind to yourself and think about your accomplishments you’ve had thus far, because you deserve it.
